Sunset Beach
It is easy to travel to Sunset Beach, NC, from any part of the country. It is conveniently located 50 miles south of the historic port of Wilmington, NC and 30 miles north of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Sunset Beach is accessible by airports located in both these cities. It also has easy access from interstate highways l-40 and 1-95, thus making it a favorite destination throughout the year. It is only a 3-4 hour drive from Raleigh, NC and Charlotte, NC. To reach the island, you have to cross over one of the last pontoon swing bridges of the state.

Bird Island: This is an undeveloped barrier island at the west end of Sunset Beach. You can get to see some endangered wildlife and bird life.
Myrtle Beach: Located at a distance of 37 miles, this beach offers fun for all. Catch up on your shopping, watch a great show, dine at any of the terrific restaurants or enjoy yourself at one of the amusement or water parks.
Historic Southport: This is a historic district that offers plenty of antique shopping, excellent restaurants, art galleries and two marinas. You can enjoy the day and take a stroll along the river front before going back to Sunset Beach. This is a perfect one-day outing.
Battleship NC: You can take a tour on the World War II ship's nine decks, crew's quarters, gun turrets and a museum store. This is the state's memorial to her WW II veterans. As you walk aboard her deck, you can envision the daily life as well as fierce combat situations which the veterans faced.
Bald Head Island: You can visit Bald Head, located in the Atlantic at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. You can reach the island by a ferry and visit 'Old Baddy' Lighthouse, which offers some captivating views.
Ingram Planetarium: This Planetarium presents science and programs through out the year. 'The Sky Tonight' is a popular show which includes telescope viewing.
Burgwin-Wright House Museum and Gardens: This is the oldest museum in Southeastern NC and was built in1770 by John Burgwin, the treasurer of the colony of Carolina. The museum houses beautiful furnishings of the 18th and 19th centuries. It has also got some beautiful garden. A formal or parterre garden, a terraced garden and an orchard are its specialties. There is also a free-standing building which houses the kitchen and craft room. Open hearth demonstrations of colonial cooking are presented every month.
Indigo Farms Produce and Garden center (Calabash): Here, you can go on tours and see the farm and animals and also go for hayrides. You can also pick strawberries and blueberries when in season.
Sunset Beach also offers some great fishing. What ever type of fishing you enjoy, the island offers them all, be it pier fishing, surf fishing or charter boat fishing. You can also indulge in some deep sea fishing aboard modern, clean and fast fishing boats. Just lounge on the beach and hunt for sea shells and build sand castles. You can even ride bikes along the quiet island roads.
